Wantagh HS Student Pens Music Book

As a musician, Wantagh High School junior Julia Froese has witnessed among instrumental and choral peer-musicians a need for additional support and an injection of confidence to perform at their best. She has combined her love of music, writing skills and an entrepreneurial focus to self-publish a music book to assist musicians with the art of making music.  

Titled “Making Music with Confidence: Takes only four key steps to success,” Julia set out to teach fellow music lovers how to warm up before an important performance, auditioning techniques, how to learn a piece of music and tips on peek performing. In short, readers will learn four steps to become concert-ready. Most importantly, Julia’s book instructs readers to follow their heart. 

“You have to be passionate about what you are doing to be successful,” Julia said. 

An accomplished soprano, Julia is an All-County musician and a member of Wantagh High School’s chorus and a cappella groups. She was selected to perform as one of 16 members of the high school’s Anora Le Voci honors chorus for the 2021-2022 school year. Additionally, Julia has performed with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra since fifth grade. 

Julia explained that writing “Making Music with Confidence” fulfills her project qualifications for a Girl Scouts of America Gold Award, the organization’s highest scouting accomplishment, but also allows her to give performing advice to musicians and those who are afraid to audition and fulfill their dreams of creating music.  

In addition to the book, Julia offers virtual workshops for musicians working on their goals through the pandemic. She also mentors fellow peers through the Tri-M Music Honor Society.  

“There wasn’t a system in place to connect to high school musicians and for them to acquire advice,” Julia explained. “Through the Tri-M mentoring program, older musicians can help prepare younger students. Older students can also acquire points by mentoring younger students and to become a member of Tri-M.”   

Teacher Sameerah Cassidy congratulated Julia on writing the book and said its success lies in Julia’s focus on the emotional side of performance and auditioning. “This book melds in beautifully with what music students need today,” Ms. Cassidy said.
