Secondary Music Groups Impress at NYSSMA Festival

A trio of Wantagh music ensembles were recognized at the June 5 board of education meeting for their exceptional performances at the NYSSMA Majors Festival. The adjudicated event, hosted by the New York State School Music Association, took place on May 20 at Hofstra University.
The Wantagh High School String Ensemble, conducted by Eliza Della Moncia, earned a sliver rating. The high school’s Wind Ensemble, led by Danilo Aviles, received a gold rating with distinction. Sameerah Cassidy’s Early Bird Chorus at Wantagh Middle School came away with a gold rating.
Approximately 130 students participate in the three ensembles. Kelly Jones, director of fine and performing arts and business education, commended the students and the ensemble conductors for their hard work. She noted that the event is one of the most respected and rigorous music evaluations in the region.
“We are so fortunate in our district to have an outstanding music program,” added Superintendent John McNamara, who noted that successes like this are a tribute to an extraordinary music faculty.
The NYSSMA Majors Festival is an opportunity for school ensembles to perform before a panel of judges. The groups receive a numerical rating and comments on their performance.
