Wantagh El Hosts an Allergy Friendly Food Drive

Wantagh Elementary Hosts an Allergy Friendly Food Drive

The Wantagh Elementary School Student Council, under the direction of school counselor Lauren Mulry, collected allergy friendly food during National Food Allergy Awareness Week from May 10-14. Students requested shelf-stable donations, which were free of one or more of the top food allergens including gluten, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish shellfish and sesame.

Ms. Mulry explained that Wantagh High School freshman Andy Braun explained the problem individuals with food allergies have when they visit a food bank. Andy’s mother, Cathy Braun, is an aide in the nurse’s office at Wantagh Elementary School. Andy also advised the students to donate their collection of food to the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead.

Ms. Mulry said the student council plans to host the drive annually. “We learned that many children with food allergies have trouble accessing safe food options through food assistance programs and we want to help change that.”
