School Happenings...
Students at the elementary level identified two self care skills and put them in their tool box. At the high school students viewed a video where high school students described self care skills of exercise, watching movies, prayer, talking with friends, getting a manicure etc... Students were then asked to identify and implement their own self care skills.
Self-care - Any activity that is deliberately undertaken in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and/or physical health.
Some Categories of Self-Care:
- Physical: Activities that improve the well-being of your physical health (e.g., taking a walk, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, dancing, playing sports)
- Emotional: Activities which help you connect, process, and reflect on a full range of emotions (e.g., journaling, creating art, music, playing with a pet )
- Mental: Activities that stimulate your mind or intellect (e.g., reading a book, solving a puzzle, playing chess or a board game)
- Spiritual: Activities that help nurture your spirit and “allow you to think bigger than yourself”. Does not have to be of a religious nature (e.g., meditation, yoga, spending time in nature)
- Social: Activities that nurture and deepen relationships (e.g., spending time with friends, sending an email to someone you like but have not seen in a while, strike up a conversation with someone you find interesting, stop spending time with people who undermine or disempower you)
