A Winter Concert Warm-up at Wantagh Elementary
A dress rehearsal for Wantagh Elementary School’s winter concert on Jan. 23 was not only a final tune up for members of the band, chorus and orchestra, it was a chance for other students to appreciate music.
Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura, during her introductions for the morning performance, commended the hard work of the student instrumentalists and vocalists. She said it was important for students in the three ensembles to be recognized by their peers, who sat as an attentive audience. Soon after, she and Assistant Principal Rachel Iannuzzi went up on stage and joined the band.
The concert orchestra, featuring fourth and fifth grade string musicians, opened the show. They performed three songs under the direction of Dina Langer. Next up was the concert band, consisting of fifth grade musicians and conducted by Danielle Fisher. Dr. Bonagura sat among the clarinet players while Ms. Iannuzzi joined the percussion section.
The show closed out with the chorus. The group of third, fourth and fifth grade singers was led by Beth Marinis and accompanied by music teacher Eliza Della Monica on the piano. Each song was introduced by a student, who spoke of its history and meaning.
Preparations for the concert, which included an evening show for families in the high school auditorium, began in September. Each group totaled about two dozen full rehearsals, in addition to small-group lessons.
