STEAM Takes the Podium: An Olympic-Inspired Day of Innovation and Exploration
Before athletes around the world walked the runway in the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan, Italy last Friday, the Forest Lake Elementary School Olympic STEAM Night took center stage featuring the school’s science, technology, art, and math athletes from grades K-5.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Stroh, the Forest Lake STEAM Committee designed a series of engaging, hands-on STEAM activities that sparked curiosity, wonder, and student engagement. This year's Olympic-themed event came to life through thoughtfully crafted stations such as ice skating with Ozobots, a bobsled ramp challenge, creating fake snow (messy and wonderful), and coding pathways for cross-country skiing.
The stations were facilitated by Forest Lake teachers alongside Molloy University preservice teachers, creating a meaningful partnership that supported student learning. Each activity encouraged creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, leaving students smiling while actively problem-solving, capturing the true spirit of STEAM learning.
Additional Olympic STEAM activities included the skiing long jump, build a flag, curling, robot ice skating, LEGO Olympic Stadium, and connecting circuit torches. Of course no Olympic event is complete without a winning medal which was presented to each student by Mr. Burke and Mrs. Ryan after completing all activities.
