5th Grade Student Council “Soup” er Bowl of Caring Helps Wantagh Community

The 5th grade Student Council at Wantagh Elementary started their day long before the school bell rang with a community service project for those in need right here in Wantagh. The council’s “Soup”er Bowl of Caring” brought 50 students together to sort, count, and pack donated cans of food and other items for the food pantry at Wantagh Elementary.
This “Soup” er Bowl of Caring didn’t put teams of students against each other like the traditional Superbowl, but each student was challenged in a different way. With 50 students in one room the noise would otherwise be loud, but Student Council coordinators Ms. LeRoy and Ms. Hess challenged students to communicate with their table partners in other ways except verbally and yes, they got the job done!
Before the donated goods were taken to the food pantry, one student from each table shared the number and type of canned goods for a quick math exercise bridging service and education together. In the end, a total of 74 cans were collected making this community service initiative and each student a winner.
