6-7 Day Gets Two Thumbs Up at Wantagh Middle School
The 6-7 craze has officially made its way to Wantagh Middle School, as sixth grade teachers created an afternoon of lessons inspired by the suddenly popular term with an undefined meaning. On Dec. 15, the 67th day of school this year, students rotated through four centers.
Teachers planned 6-7 activities to correspond with each subject area. In English language arts, students wrote about where they see themselves six or seven years into the future, or in 67 years. They completed equations in the math center that had the numbers 6 and 7 and a final answer by filling in the symbols needed. They could also plot coordinates on a chart to reveal “67.”
In social studies, students have been learning about the Code of Hammurabi, the first-ever legal codes, so they were tasked with writing 67 laws for their own school. Since 6-7 is also the inspiration for internet memes, the science station featured students creating memes based on cells and functions, which is the current topic of study. Students used Canva to make the images, and the goal was to print out and hang up 67 of the creative memes in each sixth grade science room.
Sixth grade teachers began planning 6-7 Day a few weeks in advance. They said they try to have one bonding activity for the entire grade each quarter. Teachers also dressed like students for the day, and referenced 6-7 throughout their morning classes as a build up to the afternoon event.
“It’s a social media trend that’s silly and fun,” sixth grade science teacher Grace Hostetter said, “so we decided to embrace it and use it as a way for students to memorize content while also having a good time.”
