Senior Recognized For Leadership by Senate Youth Program
Wantagh High School senior Madeline Rose has been selected as the first alternate for New York State in the 2024 United States Senate Youth Program. It is sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, in cooperation with the U.S. Senate and the education departments of all 50 states.
Madeline applied for the program as part of her search for college scholarships. Two students from each state are invited to attend the weeklong government leadership program in Washington, D.C. in March. As first alternate, Madeline would be selected if one of the two student delegates from New York is unable to attend.
The United States Senate Youth Program recognizes students for community service and student leadership. Madeline is vice president of Wantagh High School’s general organization. One of her initiatives this year as a student government leader was to create a showcase for suicide prevention month in partnership with Morgan’s Message.
Madeline is vice president of the orchestra, for which she plays the violin, and a member of the Academic Team. She also belongs to the swimming and badminton teams. Outside of school, she works with the Town of Hempstead’s Camp ANCHOR program for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, tutors middle school students in all subject areas, and teaches violin to elementary students.
To be considered for the program, Madeline had to write an essay about a political topic and participate in an interview. She also received letters of recommendation from Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone and general organization adviser Chris Nyberg.
“It feels really amazing to be named first alternate for New York for the United States Senate Youth Program,” Madeline said. “I’m really proud of all I’ve accomplished.”
Madeline is currently in the college selection process and is considering studying psychology.
