Two administrators from the Wantagh School District will be moving into new roles in the central office for the 2022-2023 school year. Carol-Ann Winans has taken on the position of executive director for curriculum and instruction K-12 while Dr. Stephanie Scolieri is the new director of human resources. 

Ms. Winans, who joined the district three years ago, was most recently the director of STEM, overseeing science, math and technology education programs. She spearheaded the transition to new science standards using the “hands-on, minds-on” approach. She introduced several new courses including middle school science research, college-level anatomy and Project Lead the Way. Before coming to Wantagh, she was the science chairperson in the Lynbrook School District.

Ms. Winans holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and secondary science education from the University of Maryland at College Park, a master’s degree in science education from Queens College and administrative certification from the College of St. Rose. She is an active member of the Science Teachers Association of New York and is currently the vice president-elect of the Nassau section. Since 2010, she has presented as numerous regional and statewide conferences for the organization and last year she received the organization’s Champion of Teacher Development Award.

“Wantagh has a very innovative and challenging educational program and I look forward to supporting the vision of the school district in this new role,” Ms. Winans said. “A high level of professionalism exists among the faculty and administration in Wantagh, and together we can enhance the love of learning among all students.” 

Dr. Scolieri has served as principal of Wantagh Middle School for the past eight years, where responsibilities included creating the master schedule, conducting teacher observations and coordinating professional development opportunities for staff. She helped establish programs such as Beautiful Me and No Place for Hate, both designed to enhance school culture.

Before coming to Wantagh, she was the curriculum coordinator for business and technology in the Sewanhaka Central High School District. Dr. Scolieri holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management and a master’s degree in secondary education from Hofstra University, an educational leadership certificate from LIU Post and a doctorate in instructional leadership from St. John’s University. 

Dr. Scolieri is a member of the New York State Association of School Personnel and has regularly attended their annual conference to stay up to date on current trends in human resources. In addition to her role in hiring, observing, evaluating, training and developing staff, she will serve as Wantagh’s Dignity for All Students Act coordinator.

“My goal is to provide support and leadership so that all students can achieve their maximum potential by hiring and supporting the best staff,” Dr. Scolieri said.
