Wantagh Students Shine During During Games for the Physically Challenged

More than 60 students, peer buddies, staff members, and chaperones from the Wantagh School District gathered in the high school auditorium for an enthusiastic sendoff to the Nassau County Games for the Physically Challenged. Dressed in matching event shirts designed by Rocco Avena, a sophomore at Wantagh High School, participants were celebrated as they made their way through a receiving line of cheering students and supporters before boarding buses bound for Mitchell Field Athletic Complex.
The annual event took place at Mitchel Athletic Complex providing students with the opportunity to showcase their abilities through a variety of athletic competitions and recreational activities. Participants took part in events such as the 40-meter and 100-meter dashes, wheelchair races, obstacle courses, throwing events, ring and bean bag tosses, batting activities, and more. Throughout the day, athletes were encouraged by their buddies, teachers, families, and fellow competitors, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement, support, and school spirit.
In addition to the athletic competitions, students enjoyed arts and crafts, coloring, games, beading, bowling, fishing activities, and other interactive experiences designed to engage participants of all abilities.
“The Nassau County Games for the Physically Challenged continue to be a wonderful celebration of inclusion, perseverance, and community,” said Dr. Maura LaChance, Supervisor of Special Education. “The athletes’ determination and enthusiasm inspire everyone in attendance. The support shown by our peer buddies, staff members, and families demonstrates the true spirit of Wantagh and helps make this event such a meaningful experience for all involved.”
The Nassau County Games for the Physically Challenged provide young people with physical challenges the opportunity to participate in competitive and recreational activities that best match their abilities. For decades, the event has brought together students from across Nassau County to celebrate achievement, friendship, and the power of inclusion.
