Forest Lake Transforms into a Winter Wonderland for a Magical STEAM Night
Just before winter break, Forest Lake’s cafeteria turned into a Winter Wonderland themed STEAM center where students were able to exercise their creativity with fun, hands on activities using materials such as cotton balls, eggs, bottle caps, and LEGO® sets to name a few.
“STEAM Night was a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in numerous exploratory activities. Participants utilized many skills throughout the night, including building, designing, creativity, and problem solving,” says STEAM coordinator Ms. DelPiano. “It was amazing to see the students and families of Forest Lake discover science and engineering practices through a hands-on experience.”
Walking through the cafeteria, students were using everyday household items such as popsicle sticks, marshmallows, shaving cream, seltzer, and baking soda to create snowball fight catapults, igloos, snowball slime, snow, arctic rockets, and blizzard lava lamps.
One of the highlights, among many, was the Robot Snowplow activity which involved coding a robot to push “snow” cotton balls into a yellow square on the floor. The intensity of this task was felt throughout the room with shrieks of excitement when the task was accomplished.
Special thanks to creativity of Ms. DelPiano and all the volunteers who made this night a huge success:
