Wantagh Students Shine in Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Jerusalem Chapter recently announced this year’s winners of its annual essay contest at the Wantagh Public Library on March 13. Six Wantagh School District students earned top honors in their respective categories in front of proud family members, school administrators, teachers, and chapter representatives.
Each student was recognized for their outstanding submission during a special ceremony hosted by Jerusalem Chapter Regent Kathryn Kenny and Vice Regent Jennifer Turcinovic. Students were presented with a check, certificate, and a special gift.
In the winner’s circle were Forest Lake Elementary student Landon Lindner, 5th grade, and Wantagh Middle School student Jack Sutton, 6th grade won in the Flag Essay category. Emma Walsh, 7th grade, and Eva Ferguson, 8th grade, each won in the American History Essay category which asked students to write about having lunch with a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Eva is also the 8th grade New York State winner and will be awarded a silver medal, certificate, check and an invitation to the New York State Conference in Rochester this September.
Victoria Chen, Wantagh High School, 11th grade, was named the “Patriots of the American Revolution Essay” winner. Students in this category researched a historical figure’s contributions and influenced the course of the American Revolution.
Special recognition was also given to social studies teachers Mrs. Beckler, Mr. Cippoletti, Mr. Tallarine, ELA teacher Mrs. Gatti, and 5th grade teacher Mrs. Mooney for their continued dedication to encouraging student participation in this meaningful annual contest.
