Make a Difference Day Focuses on Dog Safety and Pet Friendly Donations

Two furry friends made a visit to Wantagh Elementary along with their fur mom who works with the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter to kick off Make A Difference Day on March 18. The informative assembly helped students learn about the importance of dog safety, showing kindness towards dogs, and the many ways pet shelters help both cats and dogs.
During the assembly, students discussed important “do’s,” such as always asking an owner for permission before petting a dog, approaching slowly, and letting the dog sniff their hand first. They also learned the importance of using calm voices and gentle movements when around animals. These simple steps help both children and dogs feel comfortable and safe.
Equally important were the “don’ts.” Students discussed why they should never run up to a dog, disturb a dog that is eating or sleeping, or pull on a dog’s ears or tail. They also learned what to do if an unfamiliar dog approaches them, including staying still, keeping their hands close to their body, and avoiding direct eye contact.
The lesson emphasized that understanding dog behavior helps prevent accidents and builds positive interactions with pets. By the end of the session, students walked away with valuable knowledge about making safe choices with dogs, and the various TOH shelter programs for dogs and cats including the trap, neuter, and return program, and Sunday animal reading program (appointment required).
During the week following the informative assembly, students created colorful bandanas in art class and hand made blankets in STEAM to be donated to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter just minutes away from their homes.
