Wantagh Elementary Makes A Difference with Boxed Birthday Wishes
Wantagh Elementary students celebrated their second annual Make a Difference Day dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others and their communities. This year, the school once again partnered with Birthday Wishes, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing joy to children living in homeless shelters. Through their thoughtful birthday-in-a-box program, Birthday Wishes ensures that every child has the chance to experience the fun, excitement, and recognition that a birthday celebration brings.
Teachers introduced the project in their classrooms, helping students understand how their efforts make a direct impact on another child’s special day, and that acts of kindness can always make a difference within the school and in the world. Each class was assigned a child currently living in a shelter, and together, students brainstormed and selected a theme for that child’s personalized birthday box.
After themes are chosen, every student brought in one specific item from the official Birthday Wishes list. These items helped fill each box with everything needed for a festive celebration. Through creativity, compassion, and teamwork, students helped brighten birthdays and bring smiles to children who need it most.
A total of 34 boxes were assembled by students in grades K-5, wrapped in birthday themed paper, and donated to Birthday Wishes. Prior to the boxes being picked up, there was a short assembly where students shared their ideas on how other students can make a difference in another child’s life. A few ideas included inviting them to sit with them at lunch, saying hello, and playing with them during recess.
