Wantagh Appoints Elementary Curriculum Leader

The Wantagh School District welcomes veteran educator Alison Hazut as its new director of elementary curriculum and instruction, effective July 1. She was appointed to the position at the Board of Education’s June business meeting.

Ms. Hazut, a current elementary school principal, brings more than 25 years of experience to Wantagh. She has a strong background in curriculum development, assessment, data analysis, literacy, social and emotional learning, special education and technology integration.

For the past three years, she has served as the principal of West Side School, a grades 2-6 building in the Cold Spring Harbor School District. Prior to that, she was principal of Murray Avenue School in Mamaroneck. Other positions include three years as a consultant at the Ministry of Education in Israel; principal, assistant principal, math coach and teacher at The Earth School in Manhattan; and sixth grade teacher at Isaac Shalom Elementary School in Brooklyn, where she began her career in 1995.

Ms. Hazut holds a bachelor’s degree in education from SUNY Oswego and a master’s degree in leadership for educational change from Bank Street College of Education. She is enrolled in a doctoral program through St. John’s University.

In Wantagh, she will support students, teachers and administrators in three elementary schools, which each serve kindergarten through fifth grade. Ms. Hazut will coordinate districtwide elementary learning goals, develop a professional development plan for elementary staff, review curriculum maps, conduct observations, supervise elementary special-area programs and collaborate with SCOPE for the pre-K program, among other responsibilities.

“Ms. Hazut is coming to us with a wealth of experience and a strong background in elementary curriculum and instruction,” Superintendent John McNamara said. “She is going to be a really great asset to us.”
