Sara's Sensory Space at Forest Lake Elementary Honors Memory of Loving Aide
The creation of Sara's Sensory Room at Forest Lake Elementary is a story of collaboration, dedication, and community spirit. The idea for the sensory room originated last spring when Christine Moran, the school’s physical education teacher, and occupational therapist Christine Fernandez recognized the need for a calming, sensory-friendly space for students. They approached the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) with their vision, and with SEPTA’s support, the project began to take shape.
Marybeth Reynolds, SEPTA’s co-president, explained that Moran and Fernandez presented the idea to the SEPTA board towards the end of last school year, which immediately backed it. The project received two grants for $250 each written by Moran and Fernandez to purchase sensory materials for the room. The Forest Lake PTA also matched the grants, contributing an additional $500 to support the project.
Sara’s Sensory Room was named in honor of Serefina “Sara” Farb, a beloved aide who worked with special education students at Forest Lake Elementary for many years. “Dedicating this space to Sarah Farb is so special and means so much to all of us. It is a beautiful way to honor a beautiful person,” says Fernandez. Sara tragically passed away on March 26, 2023, and naming the room after her serves as a meaningful tribute to her contributions to the school community. Sara’s husband, Marc Farb, had the honor of placing the sign above the doorway to the space dedicated to his late wife.
Ms. Moran shared that the sensory room had been something she had wanted to implement for a long time. “Kids need a place to diffuse,” she said. “The room is for anyone who needs a minute.” She emphasized that the goal of the room is to help students take the time they need to calm their senses so that they can return to class as more focused and engaged learners. “The space was created because we want kids to get their needs met,” Moran explained.
The sensory room is designed to be a peaceful environment where students can relax and regulate their emotions. It is equipped with various sensory tools with plans to expand its offerings as time goes on. Art teacher Laura Capozzi contributed to the room’s décor by painting a mural of mountains on the walls, adding a soothing, nature-inspired touch to the room.
With the support of Principal Thomas Burke and shared commitment from the Forest Lake school community, the sensory room became a reality. “Sara worked closely with the children at Forest Lake and her calm, nurturing way will be forever celebrated in this space,” said Mr. Burke. “All children are invited here to come and find a peaceful place where they can clear their minds, take an imaginary adventure, or find a temporary space to relax and unwind. We are thrilled to open Sara's Sensory Space to all!”
