A Big Win Amidst the Rain Drops at Homecoming
The wet weather did nothing to stop the Warriors who had a dominating win for Wantagh High School’s homecoming on Sept. 28. The 49-0 victory over the Oyster Bay Baymen featured four first-quarter touchdowns including one on the opening kickoff.
Homecoming started with a parade up Wantagh Avenue. Community members lined the streets with their open umbrellas to show their support for the black and gold. The parade was led by local veterans and the Wantagh Fire Department, and included the Board of Education and administrators, marching band, cheerleaders, class floats, homecoming court, Miss Wantagh court, parent organizations and local youth groups. The grand marshal was Brett Meyer, who retired two years ago after 37 years as the district’s head of maintenance.
Announcer extraordinaire Bill Bogatz informed the crowd that in the 71 years of Wantagh football, it was their first ever meeting against Oyster Bay. It could not have gone better for the home team. Following the national anthem, sang by senior Lorenzo Hilliard, the Warriors showed why they are so far undefeated this year.
Before the game, Eddie Correa-Baez and Kaitlin Dillon were crowned the homecoming king and queens. The runners-up were Stephen Albano, Michael Muscarnera, Isabelle Byrne and Ava Padula. The seniors were announced as the winner of the board game-themed float competition with their Candyland design.
