Honoring Heroes and Portraying Patriotism at Mandalay
Heroism was the focus in Nicole Romagnuolo’s fourth grade classroom at Mandalay Elementary School to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The age-appropriate lesson focused on the bravery and courage demonstrated by both first responders and law enforcement that day.
Students discussed the common attributes and actions of heroes. Each student then selected a personal hero to write about – either someone in his or her life, or someone in the community who make a difference. They completed worksheets by describing their heroes, as well as what those people say and do. To make the project a little more fun, students had to give their heroes a superhero power.
After completing the outlines, students then wrote two-paragraph essays on their Chromebooks.
Throughout Mandalay, students wore red, white and blue attire to mark Patriot Day. In physical education classes, children learned about the upcoming Wantagh Warrior 9/11 Memorial 5K race, which kicks off on Sept. 22 with a fun run for kids.
