Piece by Piece, Wantagh Elementary Fifth Graders Paint Their Legacy

They’ve watched new murals come to life in the hallways for the last five years, and now fifth graders at Wantagh Elementary School have their turn to paint.
It’s an exciting moment for the young artists who get to leave their mark on the school they will depart in June. This year’s fifth graders are painting a series of connected puzzle pieces surrounding the statement, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” It is a reminder that every child is an important piece of the school and their individual triumphs contribute to their collective success. Each of the 104 fifth grade students gets one puzzle piece to paint. There are also images of a lighthouse and sunset.
Art teacher Taylor Sammut said that students brainstormed ideas during their art classes in September, and once a plan was developed, the work began. She invited three students at a time to paint and the finishing touches are being put in place. Located in a first-floor hallway, it will be another of the many student-created art pieces that bring vibrancy to Wantagh Elementary School.
