Wantagh Elementary First Graders Mark 120th Day With Style
The 100th day of school is a been there, done that moment for first graders, so at Wantagh Elementary School, they decided to celebrate the 120th day of school year.
In kindergarten, they celebrated the triple-digit milestone with great fanfare, so as first graders with even more mathematical knowledge, it was time to count a little farther. On March 20, parent volunteers visited classrooms to run stations that were engaging while also providing a numerical refresher.
At home, many children made shirts with 120 objects stuck on, which they proudly donned on the milestone day. Then, in school, they customized 120-day crowns to enhance their already festive attire.
A physical fitness center featured 12 different exercises, such as bunny hops, dancing and push-ups, which children did for 10 seconds each to total 120 seconds. They also looked at bags or bins of objects, like beans, paperclips, pennies and pom-poms, to determine if there were more than, less than or exactly 120 pieces. By rolling a die, children kept on adding until they reached 120. They also had to color in certain numbers on a 120 chart to reveal a mystery picture, and stacked 120 plastic cups.
